COSMETIC EYELID SURGERY NEWPORT BEACH
GETTING YOUTHFUL EYES BACK!
It has been said, “the eyes are the window to your soul”. They communicate much about what we are feeling on the inside. Unfortunately, aging is a fact of life and can create a false impression. Thankfully, you can do something about the appearance of your face and eyes to reverse the ravages of time. Our office offers routine procedures that can help you to achieve a more youthful appearance.
Healthy lifestyle habits are still key to your well being, but the outward signs of aging are inevitable. With a little assistance, you can look as healthy on the outside as you feel on the inside. Let us provide you that assistance!
COSMETIC EYELID SURGERY – A.K.A BLEPHAROPLASTY
The goal of cosmetic eyelid procedures is to enhance the eyes helping them to appear brighter, less tired and more youthful.
This is very important because the eyes are often how we establish contact with other people and convey our state of being. Premature aging results in sagging skin, wrinkles and puffiness. Excess skin folds over the eyelid and puffiness from underlying fat with loose skin casts dark shadows. This makes us appear tired and weathered which conveys inappropriate emotions of sadness, disinterest and even anger.
When these problem areas are improved, it can actually help to make the eyes attractive and engaging. The results are usually quite dramatic for procedures that are relatively brief and routine.
The eyelids are important for both the protection and lubrication of the eyes. Careful planning is important to maintain proper function and symmetry.
Laser treatments of the skin around the eyes can also be used to help soften wrinkles. Precision focused heat and ablation produce tightening and thickening of the skin which stimulates the production of new collagen. Botox (and related injections) can lessen the effect of dynamic squint lines and crow’s feet. Injectable fillers and fat transfer can restore volume to depressions, smoothing transitions that make us look older. Sometimes this needs to be combined with surgery for best results.
Redundant skin and droopy eyelids are not always just a cosmetic concern. The heaviness of your upper lid can also weigh it down affecting your field of vision. This can make everyday activities, such as driving, more difficult to perform. In such cases, upper blepharoplasty can improve visual fields. Careful evaluation is necessary because sometimes other issues are the cause.
IS COSMETIC EYE SURGERY RIGHT FOR ME?
There are quite a few reasons (both medical and cosmetic) why you may choose to have a Blepharoplasty procedure performed. These include:
- Your eyes make you look older than you feel
- Your eyes make you look tired, disinterested or angry
- You have bulges or “ bags” forming under your eyes
- Your upper eyelids are covered with folding skin
- Your upper vision is limited by your heavy eyelids
- You have wrinkles and excess skin around the eyes
- Your eyeshadow gets rubbed off by the folding skin
The results you can achieve from having a Blepharoplasty procedure performed will vary depending on your concerns. With the proper expectation, most people are very satisfied with the results. Results are long lasting depending on your lifestyle and other medical factors that influence your aging process.
Dr. Fink performs a customized consultation to determine the best procedures to meet your expectations. Although results can vary, your satisfaction is our goal as we help you look your best.

For proper balance, the eye area needs to be viewed as part of the whole face. Assessment starts with evaluation of other contributing factors like support from the forehead and brow. Aging includes changes to bone structure and relaxation of forehead muscles and skin causing the brow to descend. This can also contribute to your eyelid excess.
There are times when another muscle that lifts the upper eyelid may be stretched or detached causing one or both eyelids to droop. This is called eyelid ptosis and requires a completely different surgical procedure to properly correct this type of issue.
Neurological conditions like Bell’s Palsy or stroke can affect the strength of the eyelid muscles. These may cause asymmetry or affect the eyelid closure needed for protection and lubrication of the eyes. Medical eye conditions like glaucoma and dry eye issues need to be considered before planning a procedure.

As mentioned above, aging alone is not the only potential cause of your upper eyelid drooping issues. Upper eyelids connect to the brow and forehead areas to form one complex aesthetic area. A case-by-case clinical evaluation is required to be certain as to what is needed to properly correct all the issues specific to you.
If your primary concern is just the excess skin and fullness on the eyelid and not the brow position, an upper blepharoplasty may be all that is necessary. The excess skin and fat can be removed through a small incision which is hidden in the eyelid crease which is natural to everyone. Careful measurements are used to ensure the eyes can close properly afterward.
The procedure generally takes less than one hour and is performed with local anesthesia and oral sedation. The patient can generally go home right after the surgical procedure has been completed. Sutures may be the dissolvable type or those that need to be removed after about a week.
Bruising and swelling will vary but can generally be lessened by regular application of ice during the first few days afterwards. Avoiding blood thinning medications and supplements a couple weeks prior to the procedure is also very helpful.

For lower eyelids, the most common procedures are aimed at removing the under eye ‘bags’. These are generally caused by fat from behind the eye, bulging in front of the cheekbone below the eye.
Fat in the lower eyelids can either be removed or sometimes re-positioned. A strip of excess skin and muscle can also be lifted and removed to firm up the eyelid through a fine incision a few millimeters below the eyelash.
Eyelid skin is very thin and generally is one of the best healing areas on the body. Mature scars are difficult to detect even with close inspection. Sometimes there is no need to remove excess skin and just the fat can be removed from inside the eyelid without an external incision.
Alternatively, excess skin and sometimes redundant or sagging muscle is the main problem. Careful determination is necessary because too much fat removal can make your eyes look hollow and older. Sometimes volume in the form of fat transfer or fillers is also used to help recreate a youthful contour.
